At last count, 7,529 people were homeless in Boston. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can make a difference.

Finding Hope: Housing

Ted's photoHarsh lessons of homelessness inspire success

Ted is an IMPACT Employment Services client who is keeping his eye on the prize: a personal goal to maintain recovery, employment and permanent housing.

When he enrolled at IMPACT Employment Services, he had been homeless for more than 5 years.  His history included bouts with substance abuse, frequent job loss, a criminal record and a succession of stays in Boston and Quincy shelters.

Before enrolling at IMPACT, Ted had started to work on his recovery.  With this important step in place, he began to work with his IMPACT employment counselor who challenged him to set goals, work hard, take the harsh lessons of homelessness and turn them into reasons for success.

Through regular meetings with his counselor, Ted began to discover positive things about himself that would help to propel him toward his goals.

He was encouraged by his counselor and in turn he responded well; willing to “go the extra mile” to reach beyond his immediate goals. He also discovered he had a natural talent for networking!

Today, Ted has built a small cleaning service and is also working as a part-time driver for a non-profit organization. He recently moved into “his own place” and understands what he needs to do to maintain his sobriety and succeed.

Each year IMPACT Employment Services helps more than 400 men and women like Ted discover their skills and find a job.
